C&O Canal, Hancock, MD

This survey took place during our drive home from DC to Detroit. We stopped in Hancock, which is located in the most narrow part of the state of Maryland. The tent was set up along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, overlooking the Potomac River and West Virginia. Water Sample was taken from the O&C Canal. In the process, we met a kind local interested in the project who was excited to share information about the history of the area. He told us that Lord Fairfax hired a 16 year old George Washington to survey Western Maryland and West Virginia. Eventually this area become part of the New Frontier of the expanding America. The trail running alongside the canal was once a railway.
