Division of Acclimatization

The Department of Planetary Futures

The Division of Acclimatization is a socially engaged working office, a multimedia site-specific installation that invites visitors to submit suggestions for what humans will need to acclimate to their landscape as it continues to change - socially, politically, environmentally, and imaginatively. During the March 2nd First Saturday Art Crawl, as an Agent of the DoA, Brickman will collect, document, and process each suggestion from visitors in a real-time performance and engagement. As a prompt, visitors may bring a quote from something they’ve read or conjure thoughts on the spot. For the exhibition's duration after the reception, the resulting office will be on view as an installation with a receptacle for further submissions.

The office will include elements that work to recontextualize archival materials from the Folger Institute Shakespeare Library, and Brickman's time there as an Artist Research Fellow, by weaving them with artificial intelligence to create a predictive reality aimed at generating dialogue about the collective social and environmental experience of the now and beyond. The DoA considers the way literature has profoundly affected how individuals interact with their surroundings and influences: through social, historical, literary, and artificially intelligent avenues to build a shared vision for acclimatizing to whatever it is that the future holds.
